Why I'm a Planner Person

I literally can't imagine my life without a planner. Actually, there was a span of about two weeks after graduating college that I didn’t have one and it was so incredibly bizarre. I felt like I was going through life in even more of a confused and wild state than I already do normally. There is something about penciling in appointments and making lists of things you want to accomplish each day and then being able to physically mark a line or squiggle through the task or appointment once it is finished. It is so satisfying and brings my sense of accomplishment to a whole new level.

Planners also allow me the opportunity to visually map out and look at my week or month at a quick glance. That way I can see what kinds of commitments I have made and what I can expect from each day. The types of lists and entries into my planner can range from the smallest, stupidest things, like turn on the oven for dinner, to more important things like doctor visits or work shifts. For whatever reason, having this type of information written out makes me feel more prepared to take on the day/week/month that’s ahead.

Especially when I have what I call “bad brain days” where I feel more scattered and ungrounded in life. Writing these outlines of my day forces me to take a step back and look at what I want to accomplish most, what I need to prioritize and what steps I can take to feel like I have had a productive day. I am so regularly prone to brain farts and short term memory lapses that knowing I have my planner to fall back on and reference when I am making new plans and need to guarantee that I am available is like having my own personal assistant who always makes sure my life stays on track. I can say with 100% certainty that if I hadn’t used a planner throughout my life, I would have forgotten a good handful of things I had said/decided I would do.

When it comes to finding the right planner, I have both made my own planners by drawing monthly/weekly layouts and bought some truly amazing and simplistic planners. Going for a more basic and bare bones pre-made planner allows me to transform it and create a system within the pages that works best for my mind. One brand I have really loved for notebooks and just planners in general is MochiThings. Moleskin is also a really solid notebook to use as a blank slate for making your own planner. You can find some really nice planners at bookstores as well, but you might have to hunt a bit more to find the one that is just right for your organizational preferences!
