I am a naturally early riser, so when I do my weekly grocery run, it typically falls sometime between 7 and 7:30 in the morning.
As a result, there are not too many other people shopping in the store and those who are there tend to be the same people every week.
Most of the time no one will say anything and it is probably just an observation I’ve made. It’s even totally possible that none of the other shoppers even realize that I walk past them every week.
But the other week, this one guy that I usually see in the produce section initiated a conversation.
We were both inspecting the zucchinis and yellow squashes, looking for the best one and before we walked away from one another, he waved at me and said, “Don’t pass up on the brussel sprouts!”
I imagine that since we both had interest in picking out the same vegetables at that moment, he felt we had some sort of connection over our preferred produce and he was inspired to offer me the little piece of wisdom about the brussel sprouts.
Unfortunately, I have no interest in that particular veggie, but I waved back to him and said I’d go give them a look. I figured I might as well just have a nice interaction with the man and not get into which vegetables I like and which I don’t.
Since then, I’ve seen him from a distance maybe once but we have not had any repeat correspondence about which item to pick up.
Strangely though, I kind of hope one of these weeks he imparts some of his wisdom on me again. Interacting with people in little ways like that is a nice change in the sometimes monotonous and repetitive nature of everyday life.
