Movie Picks: Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Sci-Fi/Fantasy is one of my favorite movie genres because of the imaginative and innovative stories that can be crafted and told. While I was thinking about some of my favorite titles, I realized that a majority of them fall into the category of being considered a big franchise for the film industry. Something about sci-fi/fantasy and the world building aspect lends itself to multiple films being produced and as a result leads to the drive for filmmakers to continue developing the story and characters across multiple titles. Here are some of my favorites:

Harry Potter (2001-2011)

Both the books and the films hold a special place in my heart. The magic and adventure that is emphasized throughout the story is extremely immersive and I love watching these films and getting the chance to travel to Hogwarts with the characters. I will never pass up an opportunity to re-watch one of these films and love the fact that they are so constantly marathoning on cable TV.

Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit (2001-2014)

The scale of the world created through these books and movies is truly impressive. There is action, comedy, drama, basically a little bit of everything that works to grab the viewer's attention. The escalation of the story accompanied by the score and great performances really kept me on the edge of my seat and I love revisiting this world when I re-watch these films.

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

This is a beautifully crafted film that uses symbolism, color, and imagination to create a film that delivers a meaningful message in an entertaining yet heartbreaking way. It draws on classic fairy tale conventions and uses them in new and inventive ways to tell a captivating story. I love this film so much and highly recommend anyone to watch it.

Star Trek (2009)

The installments to this franchise beginning in 2009 provide a new and exciting look at classic and loved characters. The acting, directing and writing and on point and deliver a film that stands the test of time. I love going back and re-watching this set of films, they are wildly entertaining.

Star Wars (1977)

This series of films stands out to me because of how the filmmakers experimented with technology to bring new and unique visual effects to the screen. The characters are fun, the world is intriguing and the story being told is an entertaining roller coaster ride.
