Movie Picks: Rom-Com

I have only recently come to appreciate romantic comedies. I’m not totally sure why I was never drawn to this genre growing up, my parents showed me some classics from the 90s and that was really all I watched. Now, I think this genre is pretty awesome and I am slowly but surely working my way through the many titles that are considered great rom-coms. There is something really comforting about watching a rom-com knowing that even though there is going to be conflict and falling action for the characters, everything will ultimately work out in the end. Here is a short list of some of the stand-outs I’ve seen so far:

You’ve Got Mail (1998)

I remember watching this movie all the time whenever it was being shown on cable and it never got old. I have it on digital now and I think I’ve watched it at least once a month since then. There is something great about the chemistry between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan’s characters. Such a wonderful feel-good film, I love it so much.

About Time (2013)

This is a very heartwarming film with endearing character moments that not only includes the central romantic plot but a really touching story about family and a father-son relationship as well. There is also time travel which adds something different to the typical conventions that are expected from a romantic comedy.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

My favorite thing about this film is that the two main characters don’t have a real in person interaction until the very end of the film but their undeniable chemistry and connection is still perfectly conveyed to the audience. This is a film I have watched over and over and have loved just as much every time.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

This film is a true rom-com classic that is just pure joy to watch. Seeing the two characters grow and change over the many years this narrative covers is very entertaining. There is an amazing balance of comedy and emotion with extremely likable and well performed characters to carry the story.

The Holiday (2006)

This film has such a great balance between the comedy, character development, and romance. It follows the rom-com genre format pretty closely, but I think that just enhances how much of an enjoyable and casual viewing experience you can have while watching it. Overall, when I watch this I just feel happy and always have a good time.
