Cupcake Bakery Mystery Book Series Review
Series by Jenn McKinlay
I’ve always been a fan of hard hitting murder mysteries. TV, movies, books, plays you name it, if there is a murder and an investigation I’m all for it. However, even though I love an intense narrative I found that I needed a bit of a break between reading such serious and oftentimes complicated plots.
One of my other favorite genres of books to read are slice of life stories that take place somewhere like a farm, restaurant, or some other type of small business. So, when I came across the cozy mystery subgenre that seemed to blend those two genres perfectly I was excited but a little bit unsure that I would like them as much. I thought they might play up the drama and be too heavy handed with the mystery tropes. And while I found that to be true of some of the stories I didn’t mind it at all and it was actually really fun to read those tropes without them being taken too seriously.
A majority of the books that fall into this subgenre are then expanded into series. I read a good handful of books that were good and perfectly well written mysteries but they didn’t hook me enough to read onto the next installment in the series. That is until I came across Sprinkle with Murder, the first book in the Cupcake Bakery Mystery series.
Everything about the book, the characters, setting, and the balance between the murder mystery and the personal plot lines for the characters was so entertaining and engaging. Every main and secondary character has well developed flaws, quirks and unique qualities that make them believable, relatable and a joy to read about. I love being able to puzzle together the murders that occur in the books while also seeing the personal development of the characters and their evolving relationships. Every book feels like a warm hug where I get to escape to the cupcake bakery and spend time being an amateur sleuth alongside Mel, Angie (the owners of the bakery) and their friends.
I flew through the twelve (soon to be thirteen) books in the series. The plot twists and ultimate reveal of the culprit are really well paced and placed in the overarching narrative for each book which makes it extremely easy to keep reading.
I am so glad I found this series of books. Being able to look forward to the new installments in these characters stories is so exciting! This is definitely a series I will reread in the future!
