I Am Not Okay With This created by Jonathan Entwistle and Christy Hall
Synopsis: Sydney is a teenage girl navigating the trials and tribulations of high school while dealing with the complexities of her family, her budding sexuality, and mysterious superpowers just beginning to awaken deep within her.
I just binge watched I Am Not Okay With This, one of Netflix’s new original series and let's just say, I am so okay with this show. Did I mean to binge watch it all in one night? Absolutely not. Do I regret it? Not in the slightest. The only downside is now I have to wait probably a good long time for season two to be released.
The story itself was short, to the point and didn't drag which I really appreciate. It introduced the primary characters and gave them enough personality and screen time to get you invested while also leaving plenty about them to be explored in the seasons to come. Sydney, Stan and Dina are all, in my opinion, very well rounded characters with things to both love and not love so much about them. Not to mention the acting, writing and structure of the show is really well executed and all the elements really complement each other well. The fact that every episode falls somewhere between 19-25 minutes is another aspect of this show that I really like. It seems like most new shows these days, especially direct to streaming shows, are trying to deliver episodes that resemble a short movie by releasing pretty long, one hour installments. Deciding to keep the episodes shorter made the show appear more accessible because a 20 minute show is easier to work into my day than an episode that is an hour or more. The short format of the episodes was also the entire reason why I ended up watching the whole thing in one night since every time an episode ended my thought process was, “Yeah, I can make it through another one.” This watch-ability and the fact that I kept wanting to see what was going to happen next really took this show to the next level. As the season progressed, more and more unknown elements came to the foreground and resulted in the final episode containing quite the crazy and attention grabbing cliffhanger.
Sure, it’s another coming of age teen angst dramedy set in something of a hybrid time period of present day and the 70s/80s with a supernatural/sci-fi component, but I’m a sucker for it and will without a doubt be tuned in for future seasons.
